Managing backcountry facilities from Maine to Pennsylvania as well as maintaining the trails to reach them, the Appalachian Mountain Club connects people to the outdoors. These facilities serve as the base of operations for various education efforts, ranging from multi-day, curriculum-based school trips to weeklong backcountry adventures.

In addition to these recreation based programs and facilities, AMC also actively participates in conservation efforts throughout the region. This includes conducting research, developing science-based policy positions and outreach to membership to support conservation efforts.

AMC has a long history of large-scale impact in the conservation world. Whether you're looking at the AMC's role in the passage of the Weeks Act and the creation of the White Mountain National Forest or more recent efforts to conserve lands in Maine's 100 Mile Wilderness, you can be a part of driving conservation efforts forward into the future. Hut Croos are an integral part of the tradition and experience of the Appalachian Mountain Club.To become a Hut “Croo” Member means the chance to join one of the most revered mountain traditions, requiring endurance and a love of outdoor adventure! Carrying a vintage packboard of supplies weighing anywhere from 40-80 pounds, AMC Croos supply far-flung huts.

Lodge and Hut Crews
Help serve food, prepare facilities, and offer trail information to the thousands of outdoor enthusiasts that visit AMC outdoor lodges throughout the year. All lodges are located with access to trails, scenic vistas and solitude. Gain a unique set of skills while working in a close-knit environment in a place that you love.

Lodge & Hut Crew Work Term
June to October: Harriman, Mohican, Cardigan, 3-Mile Island, Cold River Camp and High Mountain Huts
Year Round: Pinkham Notch, Highland Center, Gorman Chairback and Little Lyford

Trail Crew
AMC is responsible for over 1,800 miles of trails throughout the Northeast and they need your help to maintain them. Whether you’re looking to join a professional trail crew conducting long-term trail projects or working as a leader of volunteer crews imparting leadership and trail skills to young people, the AMC has opportunities for you. They even have opportunities to live in the woods for the summer tending to AMC’s many shelters and tent sites.

Trails Work Term: June to October

A host of Naturalists and Guides positions are needed to educate those staying at AMC huts and lodges.

Outdoor Education Team
AMC has a host of platforms to educate youth and adults. Through A Mountain Classroom program, Educators engage students and teachers in environmental education, leadership development and teambuilding. In addition, AMC hosts the Teen Wilderness Program that takes young people on trips imparting leadership and backcountry skills. A host of Naturalists and Guides positions are also needed to educate those staying at AMC huts and lodges.

Outdoor Education Work Term:
April to early June and/or late August to early November: A Mountain Classroom
June to August: Teen Wilderness Adventures

Support Staff
During the high season there are thousands of guests passing through AMC facilities, hundreds of staff who need supplies, and dozens of buildings that need maintenance. Assist behind the scenes as a part of the reservations staff who help people plan their adventures or help supply staff with their needs as part of the purchasing and logistics team. If you’re handy, you can grab a hammer and shovel and help maintain the facilities as well.

AMC's White Mountain Huts have provided high mountain hospitality for more than a century. Meet some of the Croo Members who will be greeting guests this summer.

Location

Gorman Chairback Lodge & CabinsGorman Chairback Lodge & Cabins offers a spectacular location off-the-grid in the heart of Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness, renovated to feature a beautiful, central “green” lodge for meals and relaxing.

Maine
AMC owns 70,000 acres in central Maine just east of Greenville. This remote area of undeveloped land is part of the 100-mile Wilderness on the Appalachian Trail. AMC has built and renovated three facilities on the property, which offer overnight lodging and meal service for those exploring the region. Gorman Chairback, Little Lyford Pond and Medawisla Lodge are all located deep in the forest near lakes and are comprised of numerous cabins and a large dining facility.

Whites/New Hampshire
AMC has a long history in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. AMC first opened Madison Spring Hut in 1888 and have been continuing to offer rustic accommodations here ever since. Eight High Mountain Huts are scattered across the landscape as well as frontcountry lodges, including Crawford Lodge (next to Mount Cardigan State Forest), Joe Dodge Lodge (in Pinkham Notch) and The Highland Center (in Crawford Notch). Trail crews that operate out of Camp Dodge Volunteer Center support the trails between these locations. In addition to these core facilities, AMC also operates facilities in Alexandria, Chatham and on Lake Winnipesauke.

Greenleaf HutPerched at treeline overlooking Eagle Lake, Greenleaf Hut’s views of nearby Mount Lafayette inspire you to explore the length of the Franconia Ridge.

Boston/Western Massachusetts
AMC has had its headquarters in Boston for almost a century. Located in Charlestown the northernmost neighborhood of the city, AMC’s headquarters is connected to public parks and is a short walk from the Charles River. AMC also maintains trails throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut

New York/New Jersey
Located on Breakneck Pond in Harriman State Park, NY, Harriman Outdoor Center is a collection of cabins, tent platforms and 3-sided shelters put together to offer a variety of levels of accommodation to those staying at the site. Two hours to the west AMC operates Mohican Outdoor Center, located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

AMC provides a supportive and fun culture that centers on a love of the outdoors. Most work locations provide easy access to miles of trails and other recreational opportunities. AMC also provides all seasonal employees with an opportunity to stay free at the facilities that AMC runs. This allows employees to see different parts of the organization while enjoying some time in the outdoors. You will also become a member of the organization for one year, and receive a 30% discount on all goods sold in AMC stores. In addition to these side benefits, AMC also pays an hourly wage of $7.50-$11/hour.

Working with helicopters, rock drills, and razor-sharp axes are all part of the job for AMC's White Mountain Professional Trail Crew.
