NIU Lorado Taft Field Campus

Outdoor Education Instructors

Located near Oregon, Illinois, the Lorado Taft Field Campus has a rich history. The 141-acre campus was once part of the Eagle's Nest Art Colony and the Wallace Heckman estate, a peaceful property overlooking the Rock River. And if you're looking for the best cinnamon rolls in the Midwest, you've found the place.

Taft's multidisciplinary, place-based and experiential outdoor education program teaches an appreciation, understanding, and awareness of the natural community to visiting students and staff by studying and interacting with the natural world. Outdoor Education Instructors are responsible for teaching classes to students in the 4th-8th grades, developing curricula and resources for the program, assisting in the coordination of the residential outdoor education program, helping with the maintenance and upkeep of campus teaching, habitat, and resource storage areas, completing special projects, and participating in staff training prior to teaching and throughout the school year. 2024-25 positions run from mid-August through the end of May, with mid-season work options and the possibility of continued employment after May. Compensation includes $2,440/month, a private, furnished room, and health, vision, and dental insurance. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in education, science, natural resources, recreation, history, or related field, two months experience teaching or facilitating learning experiences for youth, and the ability to live in provided campus housing. Preference will be given to those who have experience as outdoor educators, leading or facilitating groups in team building exercises, and preparing lesson plans, outlines and guides. To apply, submit your cover letter, resume, transcripts, list of three reference through the NIU online application system. Applications will be considered immediately and will continue until all positions are filled. For questions contact Melanie Costello.
