Program in the Spotlight Help, Learn and Explore with Projects Abroad by participating in a worthwhile international volunteer placement or internship. Spending time overseas with Projects Abroad can last from one week to a year in nearly 30 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. Whether you teach in a Mexican school, work on a veterinary internship in India, help with English classes in Peru or participate in a medical project in Ghana, you will be joining a community of volunteers and local people, all working together to better their lives and their community. Along with a life-enriching volunteer or internship project, you will also live with a host family and experience the culture of your host country intimately. The full-time, in-country staff will meet you at the airport, introduce you to your host family and make sure you settle in well. Volunteer placements and internships include care, teaching, conservation & environment, sports, culture & community, archaeology, building, farming, performing arts, medicine & healthcare, journalism, law & human rights, international development, business and veterinary medicine & animal care. WorldTeach: where in the world do you want to teach?

WorldTeach is a great program if you are interested in living abroad, but scared to make the jump alone. You will have a group of teachers in the same boat as you to support you while you immerse yourself in the local culture. I was able to stay in Colombia after I finished and found a teaching job because of my experience with WorldTeach. –WorldTeach Colombia Volunteer

WorldTeach, a non-profit started through Harvard University, works with ministries of education to place volunteer teachers in low and middle-income countries. Volunteers are full-time teachers of all student ages and teach independently or co-teach. Most volunteers teach English, while some teach math or science. A large percentage of WorldTeach volunteers acquire full-time, paid positions in-country after their year of service.

Yearlong: American Samoa, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Namibia and Thailand.

Summer: China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti, Micronesia, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, Poland and South Africa.

Program Features: Earn your TEFL certification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), which is required for many international teaching positions. Programs in American Samoa, Marshall Islands and Micronesia are funded and cover all volunteer expenses including international airfare. The China program is funded excluding airfare. If the program is not funded, the volunteer fee covers visa sponsorship, housing, a monthly stipend, training conferences including a month-long orientation with meals and housing, health and emergency evacuation insurance, full-time field support, continued professional teaching development and an international alumni network.

The Kalu Yala intern program is an exciting opportunity for college students, recent grads and young professionals to work with the Kalu Yala team to discover a new and conscious way of living. Kalu Yala Internships is an 11-week entrepreneurial skill-share and development program for students in a variety of fields. Since Summer 2010, Kalu Yala Internships has had Interns from 43 states, 16 countries and 123 universities. Kalu Yala Internships allows students and young professionals to come to Panama and gain cultural exposure, work experience, and knowledge in order to create a project that will ultimately help shape the sustainable community of Kalu Yala. They host several programs: Agriculture/Animal Science (creating an organic farming & livestock system), Health & Wellness (working to enhance rural Panamanian healthcare), Biology (cataloging all flora & fauna and preserve the Kalu Yala's abundant biodiversity), Business & Entrepreneurship (focusing on shaping the real estate development model and forward-thinking community relations), Community Outreach & ESL (grassroots community organizing, leadership training and education in rural Panama), and Outdoor Recreation (creating a variety of sustainable recreation opportunities for residents & visitors), and new for 2014 are programs in Farm-to-Table Culinary Arts and Forestry.
