Three Incredible Leaders
Great Leaders are the key to an unforgettable active travel experience—Backroads sets the standard by staffing three Leaders with two or more support vehicles per trip.

The Leader Magic
Bright, knowledgeable, genuine, engaging and endlessly enthusiastic, Backroads Trip Leaders are renowned for their passion for transforming your vacation into the kind of inspiring and even life-changing experience you could never orchestrate on your own.

These are experiences you cannot have behind the wheel of a car, or on a train or a tour bus, or in a few excursions from a cruise ship or a secluded resort. Active travel is, at its heart, a way of connecting more authentically with the world. —Tom Hale, Founder & President

Trip Leaders
Whether by foot, bicycle, kayak, raft or ski, Trip Leaders are the catalyst for a fun, interesting, safe and personally rewarding experience for their group of active travelers. Leaders enrich each trip with their personality and passion for travel and the outdoors, while providing outstanding customer service and sharing their love and knowledge of the area. Although there is a plan for each day, each day is unique. Surprises, challenges and opportunities come up all the time.

Camp Crew
Camping Trips also have a Camp Crew with a Camp Chef and Camp Assistant who work behind the scenes with the Leader team. This dynamic duo creates delicious meals and an inviting camp atmosphere that is a unique experience to Backroads’ trips. The Camp Crew manages the camp equipment and food in some of the most beautiful National Parks in the US and Canada.

Trip Prep Specialists
Trip Prep Specialists work behind the scenes in tandem with Trip Leaders and Camp Crew to prepare each trip for a successful departure. The TPS position requires someone with a systematic and methodic approach, impeccable self-sufficiency, great attention to inventory detail, the ability to maintain all of Backroads' bikes and related equipment, has great organization skills and has desire to create a fun working environment. This is a non-guest facing role, but has a tremendous impact on the quality of each trip and the guest's experience.

Never have I found myself so stimulated, challenged, and captivated. Not only by the people with whom I work, but also by many of the guests with whom we get the chance to share experiences. Sure, there are countless challenges that come with leading groups of guests on multi-day trips, but that's what keeps it interesting. No day is the same and the skills that you already possess, coupled with the skills that you acquire during the remarkable training period, truly set you up for success (and fun!) in the field. —Austin Render, Leader since 2013

Compensation & Perks

There are so many moments when I say to myself, I can't believe I'm getting paid for this.

Backroads sets the industry standard for the total leader compensation and benefit package. Backroads enables field employees to both work and play through many perks and benefits that mitigate out-of-pocket costs when leaders are on the road. In addition to a competitive daily wage and gratuities Trip Leaders will receive:

Being a Backroads leader allows for a lifestyle of flexibility and variety that many value above all other benefits of the job.Housing
Lodging is provided while Leaders are on trips, either in hotels or at campsites depending on the trip type. Housing is also provided between trips, so Backroads field staff will not incur any out of pocket expenses for lodging during the entire season. Many of our regions worldwide have leader houses in wonderful places that are available to leaders free of charge while working, and in between trips.

Travel
Backroads provides all work related travel throughout the course of the season. It is a leader's responsibility to travel to their hub at the beginning of the season and home from their hub at the end of the season. Leaders enjoy keeping their own frequent flyer miles for personal travel, and may choose to stopover or extend their stay in desired locales within work-sponsored itineraries. While it's a leader's responsibility to cover travel costs to and from a hub at the start and end of a leaders' season, Backroads provides all travel to trip destinations during a working season.

After a hard day’s ride with your group, you will enjoy scrumptious food.Recreational Benefits
Backroads also offers several benefits to leaders that are of a more recreational nature, including generous discounts with brand-name equipment and clothing companies; Backroads trip discounts to family and friends; and their version of the company picnic: a weeklong Staff Ride in Northern Thailand, Slovenia, Crete, Spain, Tuscany or the California coast (to name a recent few).

Joie de Vivre
Perhaps the most valuable benefit is enjoying a lifestyle few can match. In addition to itineraries that feature some of the worlds' best hotels, restaurants and scenery, imagine having time off in some of the most desirable locations around the world, and having the freedom to explore on your own. Being a Backroads leader allows for a lifestyle of flexibility and variety that many value above all other benefits of the job.

There are so many moments when I say to myself, "I can't believe I'm getting paid for this." Wine tasting at a Tuscan villa, reaching the vista overlooking a seaside town, getting lost in conversation with a co-leader, finishing a ride that you never knew you were capable of doing or eating a 5-course meal where every bite is fresh and delicious. Don't get me wrong—it's hard work—but that's also something I love. There's nothing like being covered in sweat and scrubbing bike grease out from your fingernails to know you've worked a full day. Every day that I work with Backroads, I feel so much appreciation from my guests with their smiles and thanks and I know that I'm helping make incredible memories for them. —Katie Roda, Leader since 2012
